EAVESDROPPER MOVIE

J. Edgar in his earlier days.

Martin L. (Marty) Kaiser III, the Michelangelo of Surveillance Electronics,  blew the whistle on corruption during the Hoover era and became the first civilian to bug the FBI.   An ordinary man with extraordinary courage,  Marty was committed to telling the truth no matter what the cost.  The story's principal theme strikes at the heart of the controversy currently being waged between the White House and Congress over the use of unwarranted wiretaps of American citizens to prevent acts of terrorism in the wake of 9/11.  Security continues to trump the peoples' constitutional right to privacy.

Synopsis:   A leading manufacturer of bugging devices and a surveillance trainer for the FBI, CIA, and other government intelligence agencies, Marty told the truth before the National Wiretap Commission regarding invoice mark-ups that led to one of the greatest scandals in FBI history.  In retaliation for his whistleblower revelations,   the FBI declared Kaiser persona non grata to the intelligence community, resulting in a mass cancellation of equipment orders which drove his $3 million business to the brink of bankruptcy and devastated his family, reputation, and mental health.

When Northwestern Bank subsequently hired Marty to help Bank President Ed Duncan, Jr. fight FBI allegations of fraud and embezzlement, Marty bugged the FBI - using a microphone he had previously made and sold to them.   In another twist, FBI Agents, whom Marty had trained, found the bug using Kaiser's countermeasure equipment.   The Justice Department indicted Kaiser on three criminal charges: illegal eavesdropping, conspiracy to intercept FBI investigations, and transporting illegal devices across state lines.

This political drama with heart  -  a type of Enemy of the State meets A Beautiful Mind - parallels Marty's battle to survive FBI's attacks both in and outside the courtroom with his paranoia and struggle to overcome an abusive father which ultimately gives him the strength to stand up to FBI intimidation.
